Disney’s Girl Meets World Finds It’s Best Friend for Riley Matthews

When I first heard the idea of the Disney Channel doing a sequel/spinoff to everyone’s favorite coming of age sitcom Boy Meets World, I was – understandably – concerned, yet also very excited by the possibility. It’s been years since we last saw Cory and Topanga Matthews and I’d be lying if I wasn’t curious to see what they’ve been up to, but a whole new series focusing on their tweenaged daughter? It could be a disaster! But it could also be the best thing ever. Despite my misgiving, development pushed forward and now we’ve been hearing tons of exciting casting news for Girl Meets World and we have the latest right here.
Meet Sabrina Carpenter, the best friend of Cory and Topanga’s daughter, Riley (Rowan Blanchard). TVLine reported Maya Fox had snagged the role of what is no doubt going to be a female version of the original Boy Meets World’s Shawn Hunter, Cory’s best friend. I was half-hoping Riley’s best friend would literally be the daughter of Shawn, but he and his family don’t seem to be involved in the show at it’s current stage. But that doesn’t mean they won’t show up later on. Sabrina ought to be a suitable best friend for Riley. Fox is fast becoming a hot commodity for such a young actress.
Fox first made splashes at Disney when she impressed everyone with her work on the failed pilot, Gulliver Quinn, opposite Jon Heder. She next did the voice of a princess on Sofia the First. Her next role will be as the younger version of Becki Newton’s character on Fox’s new comedy, The Goodwin Games.
Production on Girl Meets World begins next month. Both original starts Ben Savage and Danielle Fishel are set to reprise their roles as Cory and Topanga – this show wouldn’t have worked without them. Boy Meets World creator Michael Jacobs will be on as an executive producer.
