John Hurt Reunites With Del Toro For The Strain
Veteran actor John Hurt is re-teaming with visionary filmmaker Guillermo del Toro and this time the match up has Hurt working for the small screen. We have the latest on FX’s daring new pilot, The Strain.
FX has cast the two-time Academy Award®-nominated actor John Hurt in The Strain. If you like your vampires scary, then you’re going to want to follow the TV project as it develops. The new pilot is based on the best-selling vampire novel trilogy from Academy Award®-Winning filmmaker Guillermo del Toro and author Chuck Hogan.
As we previously reported, the official announcement from FX regarding Hurt, follows word that House of Cards actor Corey Stoll and Breaking Dawn vampire actress Mia Maestro will lead the cast. Kevin Durand, Richard Sammel, Lauren Lee Smith, Jonathan Hyde and Miguel Gomez have also been cast.
Hurt will portray Professor Abraham Setrakian. His character is a holocaust survivor who immigrated to the United States after World War II. He now owns a pawn shop located in Spanish Harlem. As you no doubt have guessed, The Strain refers to a mysterious viral outbreak linked to an “ancient and evil strain of vampirism.” When the outbreak spreads, our heroes determine that Professor Setrakian may understand it better than anyone else. But will anyone listen in time?
In an official statement del Toro said, “I am incredibly happy to be reunited with John, who is one of the greatest actors in the world and one of my favorite people ever. Chuck and I always visualized him while writing The Strain novels and he is absolutely perfect for the part!”
I very much agree that The Strain is the perfect vehicle for bringing Hurt to television. Hurt worked with del Toro on the Hellboy films. He has an amazing narrating voice, one of the most distinct in the industry, in fact.
