Attention short story admirers and science fiction lovers of all ages; have I got a book for you. Before I get to the details however, I think I should take a moment to illuminate the uniting thread between all the marvelous shorts, bound together in the pages of Brave New Worlds: An Anthology of Dystopian [...]

Dark and Stormy Knights edited by P.N. Elrod – review

Dark and Stormy Knights edited by P.N. Elrod – review

By amberdrake on August 23, 2010

Dark and Stormy Knights is an anthology edited by P. N. Elrod, who also  has a story in the collection.  Of the nine stories within, only one was truly not to my taste, though of the others I definitely had some favorites. “Questionable Client” by Ilona Andrews will be extra special for Kate Daniels fans, [...]

Wild Cards: Busted Flush ed. by George R.R. Martin – review

Wild Cards: Busted Flush ed. by George R.R. Martin – review

By Aaron Teiser on December 4, 2009

busted flush

Busted Flush is the nineteenth book in the Wild Cards continuum and the second book of the Committee Triad. The story basically picks up where the opening book of the triad, Inside Straight, left off. The recently formed Committee, a team of superpowered aces enlisted under the auspices of the United Nations Secretariat, is flush with success and new recruits after a series of peacekeeping and disaster relief missions. Unfortunately for them, there is no rest for the righteous, and they find themselves faced with a triple threat of global crises.

Wild Cards: Inside Straight ed. by George R.R. Martin – review

inside straight
The core narrative of Inside Straight is maintained by Daniel Abraham through the perspective of his character Jonathan Hive: superpowered “ace,” blogger, amateur journalist, and reality TV show contestant. Yes, a reality TV show about superhumans trying to win a million dollars and win the title of “American Hero.” I know, it sounds like a horrible idea, but Martin, et al., really made it work.

SYNERGY – Childhood Scary Stories

By Elena Nola on October 31, 2009

synergy

Synergy is back! This is the fourth installment of the feature, and the first under my dictatorship as BSC’s editrix. If you haven’t seen this column before, the basic idea is that we put the same question to a variety of professionals (and sometimes amateurs) who interest us to create a plateful of amuse bouche interviews. This time around we took the question straight to some of the hottest names in horror, comics, urban fantasy, and more.

The question? What was your favorite scary story as a kid? The answer could be anything from an urban legend to “vampires” to a specific book or movie or comic. Anything at all…as long as it was something especially striking to you….

Respondents range from bestselling writers like Charlaine Harris and Carrie Vaughn, to grand masters like Joe R. Lansdale and Brian Lumley, to noir/crime writers like Jimmy Palmiotti and Charlie Huston, and more. If you missed our previous installments of Synergy, go check them out.

If you’ve already read those, take the jump and read our latest!
