Transformers 3: Dark of the Moon – movie review
The Autobots aren’t here for the good of humanity; they’re here for the good of America. We catch up with them attacking a nuclear weapons facility in an unknown Middle Eastern country (probably Iran). Luckily, the Transformers’ political ideology closely mirrors our own, with Optimus Prime regularly spouting off declarations of freedom. Absurdities aside (and [...]
Fast Five Quits Reality, Goes Full Spectacle – Review
Fast Five is great, superb summer entertainment, and a fitting commemoration for the 10th anniversary of the original The Fast and the Furious. Justin Lin has fashioned himself into a groundbreaking action director in the vein of Michael Bay, and delivers one of the most original action films in recent memory. Considering the Fast and Furious [...]
The Expendables – movie review
For a movie that is advertised as a “mangasm,” The Expendables is surprisingly light on homosexual subtext. All around, this movie is 100% entertainment, absurd fun that has been hard to find this summer. This is no Götterdämmerung for 80s-90s action and the men who made it possible, but more like a self parody along [...]
Predators – movie review
Don’t believe all of the inexplicably great reviews for Predators; it is a seriously stupid movie. Billed as a return to the greatness of the original Predator movie, this sequel comes off as a second-rate Avatar, where once entitled actors are brought low, and give bizarre and entertaining performances. Adrien Brody is no Schwarzenegger; hell, he [...]
24 Season 8 Episodes 23-24, 2:00-4:00PM – review
24 really disappoints by pulling every punch, and deflating a great set-up with no discernible climax. There was a conspiracy this season; it was a conspiracy by the writers to make us believe something would happen in the end. It is a real shame, considering 24 was delivering great endings just a few seasons ago, and [...]
24 Season 8, Episode 22 1:00-2:00PM – review
It doesn’t get any better than this. This is the best episode of 24 there has ever been, and it isn’t even the series finale yet. 24 really throws down the gauntlet this week, letting us know that this is truly going to be a real series finale, not a mere shoehorned season finale. Everything [...]
24 Season 8 Episode 21, 12:00-1:00PM – review
24 is hurtling like a rocket towards the series finale, and the wheels are about to fly off. 24 has left no doubt that it is willing to commit the resources necessary to give this show the send-off it deserves. This is the kind of episode that distills the best of the past and then turns [...]
24 Season 8 Episode 20, 11:00AM-12:00PM – review
Fact: Jack Bauer is a police officer’s worst nightmare. Think you can take Bauer into custody? WRONG! Think Jack Bauer is afraid to shoot you through the foot? Guess again. Think Jack Bauer will apologize? Absolutely. Bauer continues to be violent and noble by turn as the series winds down to the LAST FOUR 24 [...]
24 Season 8, Episode 19 10:00-11:00AM – review
24 is getting serious about exploring U.S. foreign policy, giving the last episodes of the series a reflective capstone on the schizophrenic fevered politics the show both engendered and thrived from. Applause to the writers, who are delivering substantive and honest portrayals of our nation’s politics and the almost unbelievable hypocrisies committed by our political class. [...]
24 Season 8, Episode 18 9:00-10:00AM – review
24 presents one of the best episodes of the entire series, relying completely on character studies with minimal action. It is a sure credit to the writers to be able to build up so much tension and forward momentum with nothing but people talking to each other. You have to wonder what happened to kick the scripts into high gear from the tedious doldrums that were the first episodes.
Splinter Cell Conviction (Xbox 360) – First Impressions Review
Who would have thought that boring-beyond-belief Splinter Cell could be transformed into a really R-rated hard-charging action franchise? In addition, Splinter Cell Conviction takes the time to set the new bar for firefight mechanics in third-person shooters. Playing Conviction is surreal, because I just can’t believe that Ubisoft took Splinter Cell and made everything exactly how [...]
24 Season 8, Episode 17 8:00-9:00AM – review
24 is really starting to spill a lot of blood on a regular basis heading into the home stretch of the series. Death, of course, raises all of the stakes and makes for much more dramatic and dynamic storytelling. Additionally, since the show doesn’t have another season to worry about, it can throw away main characters like loose change. This is an all and all good episode, a setup to be sure, but with plenty of story to offer.
