Soulless is a fantasy novel based on the premise that the separation of the Church of England from the Roman Catholic Church came about when King Henry VIII integrated the supernatural – namely vampires, werewolves, and ghosts – into English society, making them the first and only nation to treat them as anything other than the natural enemies of man. Soulless itself is set 300 years later, during the Victorian era, and the integration is now total.

Tomio back with another BSC guest spot, where we bring the talent to come in and talk about whatever they want. I’ve been meaning to tell Maria (one of our contributors here) about this book ever since I saw this cover (and whoever has been handling Orbit covers/design lately has just been doin’ it lately–there is an Imperial position open) as I know she has to dig on this cover! Soulless (out this week!) caught my eye, so I contacted Gail Carriger to see if she’d be interested in taking a break from her duties at the Parasol Protectorate so she could visit the BSC. A few broken umbrellas and some injuries to BSC agents later, she agreed to drop some brief thoughts on outlines at the BSC Deathstar.
