Guy Ritchie might be trading in a sword for a machine gun, according to the latest from Twitch, as the recent unofficial news indicates that Warner Bros wants to put aside Warren Ellis’ Excalibur and have Ritchie once again tackle DC Comics’ Sgt. Rock.

Ritchie was attached to the comic book adaptation a few years ago but it was taken over by Francis Lawrence before the project was thankfully shelved. Apparently, Lawrence wanted to take the infantry officer out of his WWII element and put him in a futuristic setting. The comic world would’ve gone crazy and I think that particular movie would have bombed big time.

Now, Warner Bros and producer Joel Silver have turned the current draft of the screenplay over to Ritchie, and Sgt. Rock will once again be taking on WWII German troops.

Since Ritchie’s involvement hasn’t been officially announced, there’s still a chance that things might change, but the guy is riding high with Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows fast approaching its release date, and Captain America: The First Avenger could renew interest in World War II action. Of course, I’m sure Warner Bros is also taking into account that comic book characters on the big screen is big business these days.

While we’re waiting to find out about the fate of Sgt. Rock, don’t forget to check out Robert Downey, Jr. in drag in the new trailer for Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows.

The trailer for Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes 2: A Game of Shadows has hit the web via Apple, and offers us a short look at Sherlock’s classic antagonist, Moriarty, played by Mad Men’s Jared Harris. Introduced by Robert Downey Jr., the trailer also offers us a look at Noomi Rapace, who plays a gypsy in the sequel to the 2009 Sherlock Holmes film. Sherlock 2 also features Stephen Fry as Mycroft Holmes. As an aside, I’ve been watching STNG on Netflix lately and last night happened to catch the episode that features the Moriarty character as a hologram who becomes self-aware, played by Daniel Davis–fantastic stuff and well played, I thought. Here is the official synopsis:

Guy Ritchie helms a new action-packed adventure, following the world’s most famous detective, Sherlock Holmes (Downey Jr.), and his longtime trusted associate, Dr. Watson (Law), as they match wits with their arch-nemesis, the criminal genius Moriarty (Harris).”

A Game of Shadows also will feature Eddie Marsan,Kelly Reilly, and returns Jude Law and Rachel McAdams. It is scheduled to hit theaters on December 16th.

The sequel is coming! Here at BSC, we’re tickled pink that Robert Downey, Jr. is returning as everyone’s most favorite pipe-toting detective. He’s bringing back Jude Law as Watson and the darling Rachel McAdams, too. But some new friends are joining in on the caper this time around.

French actor Gilles Lellouche is some kind of villain according to THR. “I’m thrilled, and I’ll play a nice bad guy,” Lellouche said. This will be his first major Hollywood role.

We hear Mad Men‘s Jared Harris will portray the biggest Sherlock villain of all, his arch-nemesis, Moriarty and Stephen Fry is also a Holmes as Sherlock’s brother. The alluring Swedish actress Noomi Repace of the original Girl with The Dragon Tattoo is also in the film and pictured with the headlining duo above in the first look at the new movie. Thank you to Shockya.com for the sneak peak. It is scheduled for a December 16th, 2011 release. Of course Guy Ritchie also returns to direct.

In a dynamic new portrayal of Arthur Conan Doyle’s most famous characters, Sherlock Holmes and his stalwart partner Watson embark on their latest challenge. Revealing fighting skills as lethal as his legendary intellect, Holmes battles as never before to bring down a new nemesis and unravel a deadly plot that could destroy the country.

Directed by Guy Ritchie. With Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law, Rachel McAdams. The legendary Sherlock Holmes get a reboot and a bit of attitude. I am a huge Sherlock Homes fan and loved The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes television series, which for many fans defined who Sherlock Holmes was. I had been awaiting this movie with great anticipation, and wasted no time in to getting to the theater to watch it once the film was released.

The film was visually dark but beautiful, and I am glad Ritchie did not try to make London all clean and posh. He truly brought forth the “grittiness” he is famous for in all his films, and did a great job overall in this new direction of a classic character. I thought that Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law’s chemistry as Sherlock Homes and Dr Watson was right on the mark. It was a real joy to watch them banter back and forth. I found Robert Downey Jr.’s portrayal of a darker, more manic Sherlock Holmes a bit foreign at first, but the moment he began his quirky Holmes “deductions,” I was hooked. The film was action-packed but also was the story of two best friends and the passion they shared for solving a mystery. I found myself on the edge of my seat quite often and laughing a bit here and there after hearing Downey’s quips as Holmes.

Hollywood has spent a bit of money reinventing old stories and hopefully bringing new life to them. Some have been great and others quite terrible; in fact I am sure a few authors are still turning in their graves over some celluloid flop. Sherlock Holmes offers us hope that sometimes Hollywood can get it right and make a film worth remembering and adding to the existing canon from which it was borrowed. I would also like to add that the actors in this film really brought it home; this film was carried on their exceptional skills, because the story is what you would expect a Sherlock Holmes mystery to be.

I really liked this film and would not mind a sequel; it was set up for one, as anyone would expect. This film had action and humor and mystery, and what more could a fanboy or fangirl wish for? The choice to see Sherlock Holmes should be “elementary, dear Watson,” so get out there and watch it!

The first trailer for Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes movie is out, and beyond having some built-in obvious appeal, it has what's on-paper a solid trio to start a cast off with in Downey Jr., Rachel McAdams and Jude Law.

Ah, something new! The first trailer for Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes movie is out, and beyond having some built-in obvious appeal, it has what’s on-paper a solid trio to start a cast off with in Downey Jr., Rachel McAdams and Jude Law.

Due out November 20, 2009; you may recall that at the beginning of the month I posted some images from the film. I’ve heard of some interesting changes or focuses related to the Holmes character for this movie, but I’m not too worried with Ritchie at the helm. He has a way of pulling of crime (Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch are as Official as it gets for being new school O.G. films).

Synopsis:

In a dynamic new portrayal of Arthur Conan Doyle’s most famous characters, “Sherlock Holmes” sends Holmes and his stalwart partner Watson on their latest challenge. Revealing fighting skills as lethal as his legendary intellect, Holmes will battle as never before to bring down a new nemesis and unravel a deadly plot that could destroy the country.
