Jekel Loves Hyde by Beth Fantaskey – Review

Jekel Loves Hyde by Beth Fantaskey – Review

By Douglas Cobb on February 1, 2011

It’s a Supernatural Romance, it’s a Mystery, it’s two, two books in one! But, is the combination effective? Does author Beth Fantaskey’s Jekel Loves Hyde handle this modern take on Robert Louis Stevenson’s The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde well and bring it to a new vibrancy and life for today’s readers? [...]

Sources of Light by Margaret McMullan – review

Sources of Light by Margaret McMullan – review

By Douglas Cobb on October 18, 2010

Set in Jackson, Mississippi, in 1962, Sources of Light is a well-crafted coming-of-age story about fourteen-year-old Samantha Thomas and how she develops a love for photography and documents key events in the Civil Rights Movement. It’s a warm and beautifully told novel that follows Sam’s attempts to fit in during her freshman year of high [...]

Graceling by Kristin Cashore – review

Graceling by Kristin Cashore – review

By Elena Nola on February 25, 2010

Kristin Cashore’s Graceling made enough of a splash when it appeared in hardback in 2008 that I made a point to acquire the paperback when it came out last fall.  It is listed as a young adult novel, and while this is entirely true, it is the sort of book that is YA only because [...]

Slammer by Allan Guthrie – review

By NerdOfNoir on December 18, 2009

slammer
Allan Guthrie knows how to keep the pages and your stomach turning like no other author working today, but with Slammer he proves a master at wrenching your heart as well. With his fifth and finest novel, Guthrie draws you into prison guard Nick Glass’s reality by jangling the holy hell out of your nerves, keeps you going with a wicked crime plot, then wraps it all up by leaving you absolutely devastated.

electric mayhem 1208

In this edition of The Electric Mayhem, I take a look at a variety of books. A throwback street book by Andre Williams, Sweets and Other Stories; Norwegian crime writer Karin Fossum’s The Water’s Edge; and the enigmatic Boston Teran’s The Creed of Violence.

Slammer by Allan Guthrie – review

Slammer by Allan Guthrie – review

slammer
Allan Guthrie specializes in tales of fractured men, and Glass might be his most striking yet, because the style of the story matches his internal struggles. This puts the reader in the shotgun seat as things get more and more twisted – except there is no seat belt or brakes on the car, and the oh shit handle just broke off in your hand. The mental breakdown that we bear witness to is, above all else, fascinating. You not only get sucked into the story but you also HAVE to find out what will happen next.
