The Heroes by Joe Abercrombie – review

By Elena Nola on April 28, 2011

The Heroes is a Joe Abercrombie book.  For better or for worse, Abercrombie has created a brand for himself with his world, his style of storytelling and characterization, and his view of epic fantasy—or at least his self-conscious decision to undermine its assumptions while working within its frame—that lead to an easy summary for a [...]

Game of Thrones Episode 1 “Winter Is Coming” Review: Boomtron Podcast #3

By Elena Nola on April 20, 2011

Boomtron Podcast is the official podcast of BSCreview and the rest of the BSC Empire.  It’s groupthink on genre news from the most un-nerdy group you will find talking about SFF in public.  This week–the first of our weekly podcasts to feature a review of a full Game of Thrones episode–Elena, Damon, and Rachel touch on [...]

Boomtron Podcast #1

Boomtron Podcast #1

By Mark on April 5, 2011

Boomtron Podcast is the offiical podcast of the BSC Empire. We follow pop culture, especially science fiction, fantasy, and comic stuff, and we’ve always got something to say about everything. We’re the nerdiest non-nerds you will ever meet, and that’s why we’re awesome. On this podcast Elena, Damon, and Rachel talk about books we’ve been [...]

Joe Abercrombie – The Heroes – video interview at NYCC

Joe Abercrombie – The Heroes – video interview at NYCC

By Elena Nola on October 23, 2010

Joe Abercrombie writes bloody fantasy books.  Bloody, bloody good, bloody fantasy–yes to all.  You may have heard of him.  Certainly if you follow my columns you have.  I’ve interviewed Joe before for this site, and I asked him all my good questions then (utter lack of foresight, I know) so for this face-to-face time a [...]

Swords and Dark Magic – edited by Lou Anders and Jonathan Strahan – review

Swords and Dark Magic – edited by Lou Anders and Jonathan Strahan – review

By Elena Nola on July 22, 2010

I grew up reading fantasy.  More than that, even, I had fantasy read to me before I could read for myself (clearly, I never had a chance).  There was a point, though, in adolescence, where I stopped reading epic, heroic, sword-wielding fantasy because it all seemed so…endlessly the same.  The irony of my timing (the [...]

The First Law trilogy by Joe Abercrombie – review

The First Law trilogy by Joe Abercrombie – review

By Elena Nola on July 14, 2010

I’m taking a page from Jay’s book and re-running some old reviews from my now-defunct personal review blog. For the most part they are unchanged in content, except for removing things that no longer apply and actual editorial scouring…no, not even my prose is immune. I find it a grave oversight that our site doesn’t [...]

Joe Abercrombie – Interview

By Elena Nola on November 23, 2009

joe abercrombie interview
Joe Abercrombie is the author of the First Law trilogy and Best Served Cold. I have been a fan since the first book in the First Law found me in a bookstore, so I was very excited to ask him a few questions. We talk shop on everything from doing research for fantasy books to the inspiration behind his next book to his favorite curse word and more.

Book Review – Best Served Cold by Joe Abercrombie

Book Review – Best Served Cold by Joe Abercrombie

By Elena Nola on July 22, 2009

best-served-cold-ambercrombieSince the books in the First Law trilogy cannot stand alone, I consider them to be one work. One super-massive-red-giant, thousands-of-pages-long, split-into-three-volumes work. That makes Best Served Cold Joe Abercrombie’s sophomore effort–which is not to say it’s sophomoric, despite the copious amount of f-bombs.
