It was Friday night in the city of Writing when the shit hit the fan. I didn’t make it down to the SF Café myself till Saturday afternoon or so, having been off at a gig that Friday night; so when I finally stumbled in, somewhat worse for wear, to grab my daily brunch of coffee and a cigarette over the Twitter Gazette, the kerfuffle was already in full swing. It’s war! people were saying. War! The neighbouring states of Amazonia and Macmilland have gone to war!

Michael Hanlon is one of Britain’s most successful science writers. He has been Science Editor at the Daily Mail for many years; prior to this he was at the Daily Express, the Independent and Irish News. He contributes regularly to magazines such as the Spectator and appears on TV and radio as a science pundit. He has headlined several science festivals and written three critically acclaimed popular science books before this one: The Science Of The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy, The Real Mars and The Worlds of Galileo. His Eternity: Our Next Billion Years was recently released, and forthcoming he has 10 Questions Science Can’t Answer Yet (March 2010)–both from Palgrave (Macmillan).
