ps publishing contest

Hell, if it was just a chance to get a Gwyneth Jones book this would be a worthwhile contest, but BSC has four books from PS Publishing up for grabs for one lucky BSC reader. Along with Jones’ Grazing The Long Acre, one winner will get Just Behind You by Ramsey Campbell, Val/Orson by Marly Youmans, and Cast a Cold Eye by Derryl Murphy and William Shunn.

Crack’d Pot Trail – A peek at Steven Erikson’s new novella

Crack’d Pot Trail – A peek at Steven Erikson’s new novella

By Jay Tomio on November 27, 2009

EriksonCrack'd Pot

If you’re a regular (and especially if you have a real monitor) at BSC you’ll notice that we are all about Crack’d Pot Trail this week! This is the latest novella by Steven Erikson chronicling the adventures of Bauchelain and Korbal Broach, coming to us from PS Publishing. I touched on it briefly back in August, and now that PS has it ready for pre-order (available in two editions, the hardcover and signed traycase), BSC is pleased to present two images from the December release. These are by Dick Berger, and as far as I know this is the first time most people will have seen them. I love me some Steven Erikson and anything in the Malazan setting.

‘Template’ by Matthew Hughes reviewed by Kurt Busiek

template matthew hughes review

Tomio here, and this is a double treat for me. First, I simply love to read books by Matthew Hughes, and I think the review below says all that needs to be said with its first line. I think Majestrum and The Spiral Labyrinth were as fun as SF gets over the last few years, fusing SF/F and crime/mystery in what I think is an optimal way. Second, the reviewer here is Kurt Busiek, who simply is one of the best voices in comics period. Not just hype, he has the track record. Remember Marvels? How about Astro City? Reading Dark Horse’s Conan right now? Today, we have Kurt Busiek’s review of Template (BSC has the excerpt), that he has allowed us to reproduce at BSC (big thanks to him for that!).

News – Because a solid deserves another solid: Jeff VanderMeer’s The Situation

By Jay Tomio on December 20, 2008

Though Jeff’s solid is probably more solid than my solid. At any rate, he recently said: I’m not much for pimping my fiction for awards and such. . . The BSC has no such problems, and indeed by at least one prominent publicist we have been dubbed the BookSpot Mafia. Though pimpin’ ain’t easy, it [...]

Exclusive – Song of Time by Ian R. MacLeod

By Jay Tomio on July 10, 2008

Something white’s lying on the shore as I cross the last ridge of shingle. Seagulls rise as I trudge towards it. I’d walk on if I could be sure that it was merely a salt-bleached log, but I can’t simply turn away. The ground slips and a bigger wave breaks over my knees. A hand [...]
