“Year of the Mountain Lion” by Maria E. Schneider – review
Maria E. Schneider, Urban Fantasy and Cozy Mystery writer has taken a trip back to her roots with the short story, “Year of the Mountain Lion.” This story is one part of Darwin’s Evolutions, a short story magazine designed specifically for Kindle readers. Not only are the stories well written, judging by this one, they all [...]
“About to Be Kissed” – a short story by Tish Cohen
The sun is brutal today, blazing so hot my freckles seem to be multiplying, exploding, spraying across my arms like a first grader’s splatter painting. It’s the last day of school and despite the intense heat, our teachers insist we have gym outdoors. Apparently, the gymnasium floor needs a fresh coat of polish. That 64 [...]
Brendan Connell short story at BSCkids!
I just twitted about this (why aren’t you following us?), but over at BSCkids we just posted another guest piece (the first was by author/director/writer Jessica Bendinger, who we also interviewed here at BSC last week! This one is a (very) short story kids’ style, called “José the Red Mummy”, written by Brendan Connell. Don’t [...]
Balefires by David Drake – review
Fans of science fiction and fantasy may be most likely to associate the name David Drake with military science fiction; however, the collection Balefires showcases how diverse his writing really is. This single author anthology also serves another purpose, since Drake writes a brief introduction to each of the stories included. These introductions give some [...]
The Coldest Girl in Coldtown by Holly Black (short story!)
You know at BSC we love Small Beer Press, Gavin Grant, and Kelly Link, and we are always pleased to see new work from a group and team that displays an inability to have unawesome (in this case, it is a word) fiction attached to their names. The don’t lose this characteristic even in their [...]
The Ghost Quartet edited by Marvin Kaye review
The Ghost Quartet is a compilation of four original stories by known authors all writing with ghosts in mind. These four stories are all vastly different and each enjoyable in their own way. Book Review – Criminal Tendencies edited by Lynne Patrick
Overall, a nice collection. The stories run the gamut from noir to cozy, modern-day to historical with a surprise futuristic thrown in. There’s a little bit of the “fantastic” here and there as well in the form of a ghost or two. I really, really wish that editors would mix genres together like this in collections more often

Jan-Ken-Pon: Tomio’s Want List – Nocturnes by Kazuo Ishiguro
The guy is probably my favorite writer on the planet. Most recently we’ve been talking the film adaptation of his fantastic Never Let Me Go at BSC. Today, I ran across this book trailer for Nocturnes, a collection by Ishiguro coming out this month.
