Crystal Rain by Tobias Buckell – review

Over the course of the next month or so, I’ll be relocating some reviews I did some years ago over at my old blog (The Bodhisattva) over to BSC. Some content that no longer makes sense (if it ever did!) and is no longer applicable, like links that don’t exist anymore, will be removed. Also, I now have the benefit of handing this to a second pair of eyes for editorial corrections–which I didn’t have or really care about before! This one is a look at Tobias Buckell’s debut, Crystal Rain.

Halo: Evolutions – Tobias Buckell, Karen Traviss, and Eric Nylund

Yesterday I received a press release from Tor announcing Halo: Evolutions, a collection of stories related to the gaming franchise that contains stories from writers like Karen Traviss, Tobias Buckell, and Eric Nylund. Traviss is basically behind the potential source material what every Star Wars fan better wish any future television of film is derived from–I love her work in that universe. Buckell is the author of some great recent SF with Crystal Rain, Ragamuffin, and Sly Mongoose, as well as Halo: The Cole Protocol. We’ve reviewed several of Buckell’s project and I interviewed him in 2008. Nylund is a veteran in the Halo universe penning several novels in that franchise and had his own Mortal Coils -a kick off to a series – published this year. We had Nylund on the BSC Beat for an interview as well.

TOC Video: Where Do You Go With 40,000 Readers?
Earlier this year I was following Pablo Defendini’s (of Tor.com) and Tobias Buckell’s twitter feed as they were reporting their attendance at TOC (Tools of Change conference). Part of that was Where Do You Go With 40,000 Readers? and featured John Scalzi and the aforementioned Buckell, along with Patrick Nielsen Hayden of Tor.
Now, the 40-minute extravaganza is online. Check it after the jump . . .
Shared Worlds workshop
A day or two late getting this up, but this a press release about the Shared Worlds Creative Writing Camp. This year the camp’s instructors include people like Jeff VanderMeer, Ann VanderMeer, Holly Black, and Tobias Buckell.
