i honestly can't wait to meet tywin. i am highly curious about him for a lot of reasons.

RE cat - now i'm going to be watching her every time she thinks of arya to see if there IS a time she considers her and jon in the same thoguht. if she ever considers jon in her thoughts at all, lol.

as always glad you continue to enjoy!!!

@Elena

LOL, sorry, that whole paragraph actually had me giggling!

I love this chapter for Donal Noye, the ancient one (lol!!). I, too, had to hear Donal talk to realize, yeah Jon, you're being kind of a prick. I do agree that this seems to be the type of bullying that would be easiest to fall into, without your ever realizing it. I always said that was one of the reasons my mother was a firm believer in "Think before you speak".

Tyrion is a fount of wisdom, and I was pleased that he and Jon became friends. I think the main reason Tyrion was interested in Jon was because of the "outsider" status, something Tyrion understands well. Just wait till you meet Tywin Lannister, Elena, and you'll see! I think he sees Jon as a sort of kindred spirit, and one who obviously needs guidance as he leaves home for the first time in his life. This always led me to believe that, despite being tactless and, at times, uncouth, he's much kinder than one would think.

Sansa...yes, she's mini Cat, imho anyway. In absorbing her mother's values, she learned what was acceptable and not acceptable to Cat and follows those without question. As to whether or not this was the wedge between Cat and Arya...that's an excellent question, but I couldn't begin to answer it. So little of Catelyn's thoughts ever linger on Arya for long, but I've never seen her think of Arya and Jon in the same thought. I can't remember if I have, anyway. Food for thought, though!

I believe that Jon IS afraid his mother was a camp follower, mainly because of Eddard's complete silence on the subject, I think. Ned did no one any favors by keeping quiet on this subject, and I believe his silence is what made any relationship between Jon and Cat truly impossible. I wish I could say more about my own suspicions, but alas, it's only a fandom theory! Maybe after the book is done?

I think Tyrion simply assumed that Bran WOULD die. After all, he's perfectly aware of the twins' affair, and even though he showed optimism regarding Bran's injuries, I truly believe he didn't think Bran would live, either.

Ooo, this was a great learning chapter for Jon, and though I got chills from Thorne's rage, I'm confident that he won't do any real damage.

Woo, this is fun!

what it would have undermined is his position as being entirely worthless...he doesn't even have the redeeming value of a sense of humor. :)

but you're right, he's not like a drill sergeant. he's just an asshole.

Since you bring up "ole Waymar Royce", I was wondering if you have reevaluated your original position on him? Now that you have seen Jon, the Night's Watch and the Sworn Brothers of the Watch do you have more sympathy for ole Waymar?
"young, arrogant, younger son of an aristocrat" seems like it could apply to both Waymar and pre Donal Jon Snow.

Funny though it would be to see Ser Alliser go all Full Metal Jacket, it would undermine the fact that he really isn't a good teacher. He doesn't tear down the recruits to make them stronger, he does it because he's a bit of a bully himself.
