I thought Avatar was awesome! The special effects in this movie were epic. I can agree that there were some parts that confused me, but there was more than enough to keep me interested the whole time. I just finished watching Avatar on DISH Online and it was great! As a customer and employee of DISH Network, I have been using DISH Online to watch movies on demand for a long time and I love being able to watch all kinds of movies when I want! I encourage anyone and everyone to take a chance and look at dishonline.com. Whether you are a customer or not, DISH Online has something to offer everyone!

Great movie. I am surprised to see some responses which are against it. My God, its worth watching movie. Story, emotions, dialogues and effects, all are near to perfect. Everyone should bear in mind that this is after all, a movie, not reality.

wtf? this movie was the most rewarding one i have ever seen, perhaps you arent psychologically smart enough to see the inner battles and debates that are going on. you seen to be just saying that is was cheesy and had a crap story, but deeper down its a love story, about a man torn between morals and 2 lives. this movie has put things in perspective for me, and i was ecstatic at the fact that there might be 2 sequels. I think i fell in love with neytiri, which, inconviniently she is a computer generated being. :(

I watched the movie in 3D and the visual effects were pretty cool but the story it self was extremely cheesy and repetitive. The movie is worth watching just to see the "blue people" but other wise its like any-other humans are the bad guy movie...

I personally found this film insultingly oversimplified in terms of the politics and realities of exploring/exploiting an alien world, and all the pretty technicolor in the world couldn't keep me from being bored by a story I have seen elsewhere and more meaningfully. I saw it because I felt like I needed to see if for myself...but I give it a big rasberry.

I also had a bittersweet experience with Avatar. Eli, great review. I felt that the 3-D technology was nothing to write home about, despite the vast amounts of hype this film received. Personally, I attribute said hype to the theme, which you [Eli] point out is "heavy-handed". Heavy-handed is, if you'll permit me, an understatement. Don't we get enough politics and views shoved down our throats enough in the news, entertainment shows, and pretty much everywhere else? Not only is this story cliche in almost every aspect, but the "tree-hugging" gets a bit nausiating. I love and respect the Earth every single day, drive a clean car, and generally do my part...but this film tips the scale of the Environmentalist movement in ways that George Soros never dreamed.

Add to that a direct assault upon military personnel and I think we get the gist of what Cameron and company (aka Hollywood) were trying to pull off. The movie wasn't all that enjoyable for me because of the heavy-handed (I like this word to describe it even if I feel it's a bit shy in delivery) nature of the story. In one particular moment, one character used "Shock and Awe", a reference to the Bush policy back in 2001...again, can you be original anymore, Cameron and company, or do you just take stuff that's already happened, wrap it in a blue alien shell, and call it creativity?

I know Hollywood loves to drive political agendas, especially when said agenda is the flavor of the month, but Avatar suffers from this and doesn't do anything innovative via storyline or technology. It's just another bunch of Hollywood gobbly-gook being shoved down our collective gullets.

Eli, you hit the nail on the head in one paragraph of your review in particular...third from the bottom that starts with "The human story pads the second act..." I agree with you 100% and that was what I am alluding to in my above analysis. The movie left me feeling like I'd watched any evening's worth of CNN or MSNBC. I didn't like Bush either, but people really, really need to get over it because there's another President in office who's currently at war...in case anyone missed it. The blame game comes off as pathetic when all I want to be is entertained for heaven's sake.
