Hey there, Stumbled upon your blog from the pic above(TNT!!) Love the setting in the desert-the town, the cinematography, .....Watch it again if for nothing more than just to see Penn interact with the funniest characters Joaquin + Billy Bob have ever played! Claire Danes and Nolte were great per usual too. Don't get hung up on lack of plot or Oliver Stone etc. Treat it like a B-movie or exploitation etc. Just for fun

Hey, thanks for the kind words, man. And if I were you, I'd run out and pick up a copy of Savages right now. Unless, of course, you'd rather see the movie first, which I can relate. But after the movie, then, definitely read the book. I don't think you'll regret it.

Having just done a whole video series on Youtube revisiting all of Stone's films in preparation for "Savages", I'm really looking forward to this. Hell, you just tell me that Stone's making a movie and I'm guaranteed to go see it whatever it may be.

I agree with most of what you said in this very entertaining read. Yes, "U Turn" was abysmal, ending a Golden Age that had lasted Stone almost a decade from "Salvador" to "Nixon". I'm just glad "Any Given Sunday" and "Alexander Revisited: The Final Cut" exist to show that Stone's still got it in him to make good movies (his last three films aren't bad, necessarily, but seem a tad mediocre compared to his other work).

I'm not sure what to expect from "Savages", having not read the book, but after reading this blog, I feel like an ideal "Savages" is going to be everything that "U Turn" failed to be. Here's hoping, as you do, that Stone bats it into the parking lot.

See, I dunno, all those reasons you listed are the reasons I think his Savages will work. I mean, I totally hear what you're saying, but I think the way Savages was told--all staccato, like you say--really lends itself to Stone's style. I mean, the proof will be in the eating, obviously, so I guess we'll have to agree to disagree for now. And we'll also have to agree that I'm right.

I'd give it more like 100:1. Stone is one of those guys who has lost the ability to make a film. He keeps trying to keep up with the kids and ends up making nonsensical, mish mashes that hurt my eyes. If he can keep his hand out of his bag of "tricks" like switching film stock, animated sequences, attempts at non-linear editing that merely confuse the situation, he may have a shot. The book is pretty straightforward, but what sacres me is that surely Stone was attached to Winslow's non-traditional writing style. The truncated sentences, the terse, staccato of the language. If that serves as any inspiration for Stone, we're all in for a long night.
