Hey, thanks for the kind words, man. And if I were you, I’d run out and pick up a copy of Savages right now. Unless, of course, you’d rather see the movie first, which I can relate. But after the movie, then, definitely read the book. I don’t think you’ll regret it.

I agree with most of what you said in this very entertaining read. Yes, “U Turn” was abysmal, ending a Golden Age that had lasted Stone almost a decade from “Salvador” to “Nixon”. I’m just glad “Any Given Sunday” and “Alexander Revisited: The Final Cut” exist to show that Stone’s still got it in him to make good movies (his last three films aren’t bad, necessarily, but seem a tad mediocre compared to his other work).

I’m not sure what to expect from “Savages”, having not read the book, but after reading this blog, I feel like an ideal “Savages” is going to be everything that “U Turn” failed to be. Here’s hoping, as you do, that Stone bats it into the parking lot.

Yeah, I get you. I think I feel the same way about Natural Born Killers as you do about U Turn. Either way, we’re definitely both way totally stoked, bro.

See, I dunno, all those reasons you listed are the reasons I think his Savages will work. I mean, I totally hear what you’re saying, but I think the way Savages was told–all staccato, like you say–really lends itself to Stone’s style. I mean, the proof will be in the eating, obviously, so I guess we’ll have to agree to disagree for now. And we’ll also have to agree that I’m right.
