Thanks for an excellent overview. Upon finishing this superb trilogy i had so many questions buzzing around in my head. This to me is a sign of great literature or art, when you start questioning its meaning. There are many answers one can attain all plausible. Your explanation does make sense but it does leave some questions. For example, if we were to see the story from the girls view point, does that mean Helens encounter with Armstrong and Aldrin also imagined? Even before her mother left for space? Your review does make sense though. Theres a moment wr see the girl on a coach, day dreaming about Mars and so on, which may be a big clue to the answer which you have outlined.

But yet, but yet…so many more questions!

A thoroughly enjoyable story and a great essay!

I was planning on writing something on Planetes but it is not exactly easy to come by… it’s been a while since it was published in translation and it is now mostly out of print. Even in France (my go-to culture for translated manga) there is no recent edition of the series 🙁 I’ll keep an eye out for it though.
